Some Good Ways to Give Your Plumbing a Great Start to the New Year

person-writing-a-list-of-new-year's-resolutions

Studies show that most New Year’s resolutions are about personal health. People want to eat better, drink more water, exercise more often, and so on. This is great—but don’t forget that wellbeing is something that applies to more than just your body. Your home deserves a New Year’s resolution as well! Here’s one: don’t ignore your plumbing until something goes wrong. Set it up for success this year.

Inspection

If you’ve got any concerns worrying away at the back of your mind, a plumbing inspection would be the perfect way to start the year. This can catch anything from slow or sneaky leaks in hard-to-spot places to out-of-date piping materials that should be replaced for your health. (Did you know lead was still used in plumbing solder until 1987?)

Maintenance

While you might make sure to bring your car in for maintenance, and we certainly hope you have maintenance done on your home heating and cooling systems, plumbing is often overlooked. While your entire plumbing system and all the appliances in your home that use water deserve some care, there are a couple of areas of greatest importance.

Your water heater in particular should really be checked on every year, because an unnoticed problem with that could lead to not just cold showers but major water damage. Often, what a water heater really needs in order to function well for as long as possible is regular system flushes to wash out sediment and mineral scaling.

And if you have a sump pump, you don’t need to be told how important they are. The last thing you want is to have a situation occur that necessitates the sump pump and for it to simply not start up! Have your sump pump cleaned and maintained at the start of the year so that you’ll know you can rely on it.

Water Treatment

That mineral scaling we spoke about doesn’t just affect your water heater. If you have especially hard water, mineral deposits are building up throughout your home’s plumbing. The high mineral content is also not great for your hair and skin, decreases the water’s ability to create suds, leaves residue on laundry and dishes, and contributes to the development of soap scum in your shower and drains.

If this is a problem you’ve been dealing with, instead of suffering, or trying to scrape away the scaling from your showerhead and everyplace else yourself, you would benefit from a water softening system. This catches the minerals when they enter your home and bonds them to something else, so they won’t cling to everything in your home.
